Children love rhyming and repetition. They love to have their favorite books read to them over and over and over and over again until they have them memorized. This is the way children learn. Reading to your children is one of the best things you can do with and for them. It is an activity they will never forget and time with you they will always treasure.
Jane Yolen and Andrew Fusek Peters have collected a children’s first book of bedtime poems entitled, Switching on the Moon: A Very First Book of Bedtime Poems. These poems are darling and kept my children mesmerized as I read it aloud to them. The art work is cute showing details of each individual poem.
The poems all center on the topics of Going to Bed (including bath time), Sweet Dreams and In the Night. Some of our favorites included a poem by Jo Ellen Bogart about bathing and being dirty and one by Robert Scotellaro about the bath time pirate, as well as several night noises poems.
We really enjoyed Switching on the Moon and made us smile. Even my older children enjoyed it, although the book is recommended for children 0-5. I am sure this book will become another favorite in our home.
Switching on the Moon is published by Candlewick Press and may be purchased at major book retailers for approximately $21.99 in hardcover.
With the holidays coming up this would make a wonderful gift to get children “hooked on reading”!
