Interview with Nokt Designer – Naomi Hunt
Shannon, I was excited when I came across your site one evening and knew that I had to contact you to see if you were open to an interview. I appreciate you taking the time to speak/write to me. First things first, your website and blog are very upbeat and positive about pregnancy and that is rare, did you happen to have a fabulous pregnancy experience or where does the positive attitude stem from?
My pregnancy was actually difficult for me both physically and emotionally. I kept waiting for those glowing pregnant feelings to kick in that it seemed everyone else was experiencing but me…..I felt terribly sick for the first half of my pregnancy, and battle with pre-term labor starting in the seventy month. My little boy arrive 6 weeks before his due date via emergency c-section. The postpartum depression I struggled with for six month after he was born was the icing on the cake. Despite all of this, motherhood was and is the most beautiful expression of sacrificial love a woman can make. My experience with pregnancy gave me an overwhelming feeling of respect and admiration for all mothers…..and I have an especially tender place in my heart for first time moms.
How did Nokt get started? What brought you into the business?
I didn’t buy a single article of maternity clothing when I was pregnant. Most of the clothing I saw online or in maternity stores seemed so frumpy and not “me”…..I like to wear trendy fashions and interesting fits. I didn’t want to change my style of dressing during my pregnancy.
How/where are your clothing made?
Nokt is made locally her in Los Angeles. We are able to better control the quality of our garments by keeping things close to home. Los Angeles has some of the best dyeing and washing facilities that exisit….since we have all these great marble washes and amazing dyeing techniques in the collection, it only makes sense to do it all here.
How do they differ from what is out there already or what is unique about your products?
The great washes and trendy bodies are really what set us apart. Our Moms have a great sense of style. They wore cool stuff before they were pregnant, and they don’t want to look dowdy or outdated now that they’ve got a tummy. I know what’s out there in the maternity world and I’m not saying there’s nothing that looks cute. I just want there to be more to choose from, so much of it looks the same. Being pregnant is such a beautiful thing, I don’t think a woman should have to settle for a wardrobe that makes them feel ugly or out of style.
Amen to that! Do you plan to expand your line any time soon?
Of course! We have so much we are planning on doing. It’s so exciting! We’ll be doing some nursing tops and dresses before long.
Oh how I wish you had been around for some of my eight pregnancies! So many of the nursing tops I tried did not fit me correctly and dresses I had custom made when I was expecting my fourth and yes, I am still wearing them. I hope you include some petite sizes. I find so much of the nursing/maternity wear is geared towards the average height woman and I am only 5’3 so it is hard to find things to hand/fit right and feel good. And I know there are more of us petite women out there. What is your mission at Nokt?
To make pregnant women look and feel sexy, beautiful and stylish.
Love, love, love that mission. What are your tips for pregnant moms who want to look good and feel good throughout their pregnancy?
1) Eat as healthy as you can. It really helps to write down what you’re eating. Every day as a way of being accountable to yourself. No one wants to have to see “3 bowls of Lucky Charms and 8 pieces of bacon” on their food journal! It really helped me make sure I was getting enough protein, etc. when I wrote it down and i was able to stay at a healthy weight by eating the right things.
2) Try to exercise! But don’t guilt trip yourself if you don’t feel up to it. Just spending a few minutes stretching a little and focusing on your posture and breathing can make you feel as great as an entire yoga session.
3) Make an effort to look cute. It does wonders for your general sense of well-being. I know how tempting it is to skip makeup and just wear sweat pants. But taking a few minutes to put together a cute outfit will put a spring in your step and make you feel good about yourself.
Thank you for your time and tips.id you happen to have a fabulous pregnancy
