Daniel’s Mile-High turkey Sandwich is a whimsical story with educational themes encouraging creativity, family teamwork, emotional awareness, and volunteering in the community. Author Roald Dahl inspired the author, Victoria Lerman, in her writing and illustrations for this book.
This was a delightful book that our whole family enjoyed! The book is about Daniel who comes home from school hungry and proceeds to make a mile-high turkey sandwich. While trying to get a plate he falls and hits his head…he then dream he is in a sandwich world complete with a pickle police squad car. When he finally wakes up Daniel’s mom gives him an ice pack and helps him finish making his sandwich. Together they decide that there is too much sandwich and they should share it with the local food shelter. Having enjoys their experience so much Daniel and his mother decide to visit the shelter each month with a new recipe.
We really enjoyed this book. Our whole family laughed during Daniel’s dream sequence, the children thought it was really funny to have a pickle police. I also liked that it taught some lessons…especially that you can get hurt is you climb the counter to get a plate (I am constantly warning about this activity in our house). Finally, we all loved that this book reached out to the community and showed what you could do with extra food. We loved that Daniel and his mom visited the local food shelter and not only once, but continued to go each month. I enjoyed reading a book to my children that talked about giving back to the community. Our family gives to the local food pantry on a continual basis and I loved being able to show my children that other people give back to the community like we do!
