A brand new compilation from the Berenstain Bears teaches emergent readers how to lend a hand!
Brother, Sister, and the Good Deed Scouts return with three popular stories by Mike and Jan Berenstain packed into one colorful new book. The Berenstain Bears Good Deed Scouts Help Their Neighbors.
Each story published originally in 2012, as part of the I Can Read! Series, uses simple sentences and playful illustrations to teach readers aged four to seven the importance of volunteering and helping others.
Here is a short summary of each story in the compilation:
In Honey Hunt Helpers, the Good Deed Scouts team up with Papa Bear on a quest for Bear Country’s best wild honey. Determined to help Papa with the local honey contest, Brother, Sister, Cousin Fred, and Lizzie follow their leader through a series of hilarious obstacles – hollow logs, muddy bogs, streams, and even a swarm of bees!
In Mama’s Helpers, the scouts help Mama Bear around the house. From drying the dishes to dusting the basement, they show readers that a kind heart and willing assistance can go along way.
In the third story, Help the Homeless, Widow McBear wants to open a homeless shelter and invites the cousins to help restore an abandoned house atop “Spook Hill.†The young Good Deed Scouts are eager to get to work until they begin to imagine ghosts, goblins, and monsters hiding in the old house. With a little courage, some good old-fashioned hard work, and help from Old Tom, a homeless bear, the scouts rise to the occasion an realize the importance of helping those in need.
Just in time for summer! The Berenstain Bears Good Deed Scouts Help Their Neighbors is sure to rouse young readers to action, inspiring them to get up and spend their free time spreading a little joy and goodwill in the community by helping others – whether it be the homeless or members of their family.
Our review:
This is another wonderful Berenstain Bears book! We love the loveable Berenstain Bears, so this book has quickly become a favorite! As a mom I love that this book is part of the I Can Read! Series because it lets my children experience independent reading. My children are 9, 7, and 4 so this is a great book for their ages. I found my 9-year-old reading to the 4-year-old and then the 7-year-old reading alone. My four year old does not read yet but loves looking at the pictures and hearing the stories from her siblings.
Overall this is a wonderful book with good lessons in each story. I am glad to see a book that advocates helping the community. It has helped foster the importance of giving and outreach for people in need.
For our family the book fostered discussion about what we could do to help serve our community. We have decided to give to the food pantry and help clean up the school grounds with my daughters Girl Scout Troop. This book was a great way to show the children just what could be accomplished if they lent a hand!

I grew up reading these books but I had forgotten all about them. I’ll definitely need to pick up a few titles for my kids now that they are learning to read!
