As I mentioned on Monday for our current giveaway, Tinytongs are the unique child-sized eating utensils created to make mealtime less stressful, less messy and more successful. The Tinytongs collection includes four stylish, ergonomically-shaped child-sized tongs in four fashionable colors. Tinytongs are made from polypropylene with TPE over-molding and are non-toxic, lead-, BPA- and phtalate-free. Tinytongs has passed all voluntary testing as specified in Consumer Products Safety Improvement Act 2008 (CPSIA)(H.R. 4040).
I have to admit this product got my attention. I loved that the company is conscious of BPA and phtalate issues and is providing an alternative for concerned parents. I also thought it would provide a solution to mealtime messes. However, Tinytongs was not very popular in our home. Yes, the children were intrigued and certainly tried them, but my 21-month-old and 3.5 year old had a hard time figuring them out. On the other hand, my six-year-old, whose dexterity has amazed us since he was 2 and 3 years old, had no problems at all. The thing is that he isn’t the one that usually has a mess at his place around our meal table.
Therefore, based on our personal testing, I believe that the success of Tinytongs greatly depends upon a child’s hand-eye coordination, dexterity, practice and much patience on the part of the child and parent. It is a new tool that requires a squeezing motion to be learned since most children already feeding themselves are used to digging in with a fork or spoon with a scooping motion.
